Frequently Asked Questions
🐾 Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Training
1. What training methods do you use?
At NayNays Puppers, we believe training should build trust — not fear. That’s why we use positive reinforcement and science-backed methods to teach real-life skills and create lasting behavior change. No force, no punishment — just clear communication, motivation, and relationship-based learning. Our goal is to help you and your pup work as a team with confidence and joy (and cookies, of course).
2. What age should I start training my dog?
The earlier, the better — but it’s never too late to start! Puppies can begin foundational training as early as 8 weeks old, learning confidence, social skills, and basic manners. But older dogs can absolutely learn too. Whether you're working with a brand-new puppy, a teenage wild child, or a senior dog needing a refresher, we’ll meet you where you are and help you move forward.
3. Do you offer training for problem behaviors?
Yes, we do! Our behavior training programs are designed to help with challenges like leash reactivity, barking, jumping, fear-based behaviors, separation anxiety, and more. These sessions focus on understanding your dog’s emotional state and teaching alternative behaviors in a way that feels safe and rewarding. No judgment here — just customized support and practical solutions for everyday life.
4. What’s the difference between obedience and behavior training?
Great question!
Obedience training focuses on teaching structured skills and cues like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and loose-leash walking — perfect for creating polite manners and reliable communication.
Behavior training digs deeper into the “why” behind actions, helping dogs overcome fear, frustration, or anxiety that leads to problem behavior.
Most dogs benefit from a mix of both, and we’ll help you choose the right path.
5. How long does it take to see results?
Every dog is unique, so progress depends on your dog’s history, age, environment, and consistency at home. Many families see small wins within the first few sessions, while others need ongoing support for more complex issues. We’ll give you realistic expectations, hands-on guidance, and tools to keep the momentum going between sessions. We’re in this with you!
6. Do you offer virtual training?
Yes! Our Train & Chill: Online Edition lets you work with us from anywhere in Canada. Virtual training is a great option for:
Busy families or remote workers
Dogs who are reactive or overwhelmed in new settings
Owners looking for expert support without leaving home
Sessions are live, personalized, and just as effective as in-person — with the bonus of your dog learning in their own environment.
7. Do you use treats in training?
We sure do — and your dog will thank us! 🐶
Food is one of the most effective and ethical ways to reinforce behavior. That said, we tailor rewards to each dog. Some love our monster-themed cookies, others prefer cheese, praise, toys, or play. Our job is to find what motivates your pup and use it strategically to build trust and success without bribing or overfeeding.
8. Do you offer group classes or only private sessions?
Right now, we focus on private one-on-one training to give you and your dog the attention and customization you deserve. Private sessions allow us to move at your pace, target your specific goals, and work in real-world environments. Group classes may return in the future, so if you're interested, join our waitlist to stay in the loop!
9. Can the whole family be involved in training?
Absolutely — and we encourage it! Dogs thrive on consistency, so when the whole family is on the same page, training sticks faster. We welcome parents, partners, roommates, and (age-appropriate) kids to be part of the process. We’ll help everyone understand how to communicate with your pup in a fun, simple, and respectful way.
10. Where are your training services available?
We offer in-person training in Welland and at our location for clients throughout the Niagara Region, including Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Thorold, and surrounding areas. Not local? No problem! Our virtual training programs are available Canada-wide and internationally, giving dog parents across the country access to expert help, no matter where they live. Whether you're training at home or on the go, we’ve got a solution that fits.
